CHAPTER EIGHT

When the sun was high in the Mexican sky, Lunis was awoken from a lazy afternoon nap by the sounds of scratching claws on the hotel's exterior. He stirred in time to throw glamour up to camouflage himself as two large eyes peeked up over the side of the rooftop.

A moment later, a little squirrel Lunis had known for quite some time and liked a lot stood on the edge of the hotel. The intelligent creature held a small, strange lens to one of his eyes and peered through it in his direction before snickering. “As I suspected… You can take down your glamour, Lunis. I see you.”

The small rodent must've suspected the blue dragon was using glamour to hide in case one of the guests or employees came up to the roof.

Realizing the squirrel had caught him, Lunis dropped the glamour and materialized at once with a wide grin.

“Well, hey there, Faraday. Did you win an all-inclusive vacation to this place too?”

The squirrel shook his head, climbed over the ledge, and scurried closer to the dragon. The pair had worked together on other missions and as Beaufonts, knew each other quite well.

“No, I received an internship to learn Mexican cooking. Surprisingly, I didn’t apply for the opportunity. How about you?”

“Yeah, it was like the package dropped magically into my lap.” Lunis sniffed the air. “Do you smell a rat?”

“More like a feline.” Faraday snickered.

“How did you know I was up here?”

“Well, although Laura is growing, I didn’t buy that the twelve-year-old ate an entire rack of lamb. That’s what she tried to convince her mother of when it went missing.”

Lunis licked his chops. “That rack of lamb was delicious.”

“Then I put together that someone had lured me here. I believe it was Plato,” Faraday continued.

The blue dragon nodded. “Oh, yes, this whole situation reeks of the magical lynx.”

“I figured that if Plato lured me here to solve the goings-on, he might've also secretly recruited you.”

“Yes, dear Watson, I think your observation is accurate.”

Faraday grimaced and crossed his tiny arms. “Why do you get to be Sherlock Holmes in this scenario?”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“Not really,” Faraday said grumpily.

“Because I smoke a pipe.” Lunis held an imaginary pipe to his mouth and blew out smoke rings.

The squirrel laughed. “That’s the other way I figured you out. Francesca said she kept smelling a bonfire when tidying up the lawn area and hearing a flapping sound.”

“Hey, you didn’t expect me to eat the rack of lamb raw. I’m a dragon, not a savage.”

Faraday nodded. “So you smoked it. That makes sense.”

“I have a related question for you.” Lunis hid a grin.

“I’m certain you don’t,” the squirrel replied dryly.

“If we are what we eat, does that make you nuts?”

Faraday didn’t laugh. Instead, he shook his head. “I saw that joke coming a mile away. You know I’m allergic to nuts.”

“Right, because that’s not weird for a squirrel.”

“I talk,” Faraday countered. “That’s what makes me weird.”

“Plus that whole science thing you do.” Lunis indicated the monocle hanging from Faraday’s neck.
